Our Elementary School Division is located in Building Two of the school. In every subject area, the curriculum our students follow exceeds the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards. All courses conform to the Newark Archdiocese School Office Curriculum Guidelines. Our students consistently exceed local and national averages in standardized test scores.
Along with a respect for others, our first-grade program establishes a foundation for all subsequent learning. A combination of differentiated, literature-based reading and phonics programs gives our students a strong reading platform. Commencing in first grade, the curriculum includes a flexible level ability-grouped reading program that contains a strong phonics component. Language arts is comprised of English grammar, sentence structure, writing skills, spelling, and handwriting. In science and social studies, students learn about themselves and the world through teacher-led discussions and hands-on activities.
The goal of second grade is to build upon and strengthen the skills learned in first grade while introducing new and more complex concepts. Heavy emphasis is placed on reading, mathematics, and communication skills. Phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension are stressed in the second-grade reading program. As with the first-grade curriculum, the reading program is comprised of three separate classes. The students meet with their Math Drill class weekly to develop and challenge math skills based on their aptitude level. Manuscript writing is introduced. Religion classes help the students as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist.
Each core subject in this curriculum offers opportunities for enrichment and reinforcement. In addition to math fundamentals, students study measurement, geometry, fractions, multiplication, decimals, and probability. The students continue to meet weekly for multi-level math instruction. A strong emphasis is placed on writing skills, usage, and spelling. Traditionally, our third graders reenact the Nativity at our Christmas concert.
This rigorous academic program consists of all major subjects with the continued three-level, reading curriculum. Weekly science, writing, and math labs help the students become independent thinkers and effective communicators. Our fourth-grade students learn to take notes in outline form, organize data, analyze information, and read for a purpose ― all necessary skills for success in Middle School.
